Spinal anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation

The 2nd module of the 3rd level (advanced) anaesthesia course (AN32) will deal with intrathecal administration of local anaesthetics, opioids and adjuvants, and with mechanical ventilation for thoracic surgery.

Spinal anaesthesia is a technique with specific indications and contraindications, although veterinary anaesthesia books suggest it is an alternative to a failed epidural anaesthesia. Differences with epidural anaesthesia in needle selection, dosing, indications and contraindications, and haemodynamic effects will be elucidated.

Insights into ventilatory support for thoracic surgery will be provided, including physiology of the open thorax, one lung ventilation, and lung protective ventilation strategies.

The course will be held at Portoni Rossi Veterinary Hospital in Zola Predosa (Bologna) from 25th to 27th of September. More details in the ISVRA CPD calendar (pages 5, 11 and 26). To register click on the ‘Registration form’ button above and download the form (interactive PDF).

Registration deadline: 26th of August
