Spinal anaesthesia and ventilatory support for thoracic surgery

The spinal anaesthesia and ventilation for thoracic surgery module (AN32) (2nd module of the 3rd level anaesthesia course) will be at Portoni Rossi Veterinary Hospital in Zola Predosa (Bologna) 11th through 13th of July.

Spinal anaesthesia is a technique with specific indications and contraindications, and it is not an alternative to a failed epidural anaesthesia as suggested by most veterinary anaesthesia books and anaesthesia specialists. Differences with epidural anaesthesia in needle selection, drug selection, dosing, indications and contraindications, and haemodynamic effects will be discussed.

Insights into ventilatory support for thoracic surgery will be provided, including physiology of the open thorax, NMBAs, one lung ventilation, and lung protective ventilation strategies.
